The Three Estates
Estates
The French Revolution had three estates at the time:
-The Clergy
- The Nobility
-and The common people
The Clergy consist of kings, queens, princes, and the Roman Catholic Clergy. The Nobility consist of royal guards, judges, and owned 20% of the land. The common people consisted of peasants, city workers and bourgeoisie.
1st estate-1% of the population
2nd estate-2% of the population
3rd estate- 97% of the population
Each estate had a certain number of representatives, and each estate had one vote. Whenever the had a debate on when to raise taxes for which estate the clergy and nobles (1st and 2nd estates) voted together to raise the taxes in the 3rd estate. The 3rd estate which made up 97% of the population and had very little right thought that since they are the largest estate that they should have twice the votes. Them only having 1 vote and the constant rise in taxes took half of every common persons income. Not every person in the 3rd estate was poor. You had you bourgeoisie who were wealthy merchants and skilled workers, but most of the common people like peasants and city workers were paid poorly and to make it worse taxes were added. This led to one of the causes of the french revolution.
